The workplace can be brilliant, an arena for all of us and our needs. From go-getting achievers who want their own empires to those who just want cash to spend on the things we like, we can all get something out of it.
But for most of us it's no good pretending it's something it isn't. As a PR consultant and freelancer I've seen the incompetents masquerading as entrepreneurs, the business obsessives driving an organisation out of business and the MBAs being taken in by this week's new business mantra, as well as the sexual predators haunting the lives of the vulnerable. I want to show people that they have not lost it, and that somebody else has noticed that all is not as it should be.

This is a very short “quick read” eBook that will either have you howling with delight or sighing with deep depression.
Yes, the Great British Workplace is guaranteed to make a cynic from the most confident, vocal optimist. Here the author has not necessarily discovered something new yet he has fiendishly decided to put a lot of talking points together to make you just want to lose the will to live.
Things can really be that bad and many of these same delightful examples are not just a “British disease” either. The sh-t, it must be said, is spread quite universally around the world. The author ran out of steam or his self-preservation instinct kicked in and the A-Z guide petered out with a few characters remaining unobserved and unloved. Surely W, X, Y and Z could have been covered - or maybe this is an -style cost-cutting measure so A-Z has been redefined, according to operational exigencies and interpretative constraints.
It would have been nice to have been able to think that some of the examples given are far-fetched, unfairly treated or blown out of all proportion but, nope, that was not possible. In each and every case this reviewer could see exactly what the author was referring to. In many ways it is a good job that this book was so small. We don’t go to work with the naive view that things are perfect and could never be better. A distillation of our dysfunctional workplace was sufficient - anything else might be starting to rub salt into deep wounds. Maybe the author thought long and hard about this - he doesn’t want to be named in court for being arguably responsible for somebody “going postal”.
Yet there is no solution in sight, no recommendation for change, no hope. It is just a case of probably taking what comes to you, hitting the bottle or dreaming of hitting your co-worker. You might already laugh at them and laugh about them. Who claimed laughter is the best medicine?
