A kung-fu action thriller set in the unforgiving Alaskan wilderness where an archeological dig uncovers a trove of 7,000 year old documents that describe a lost civilization of ancient Chinese that once thrived in North America and reveal a lost trove of centuries-old hidden martial arts knowledge. When an assassins guild attempts to steal this newfound power, the last living descendent of the original monks must reclaim his destiny, protect his people's secrets and become the master of a thousand arts. Created by L&E Productions and written by Stuart Moore (Wolverine Noir; Namor The First Mutant).

A THOUSAND ARTS is a superior graphic novel. Comics, as a whole, are desperate for new ideas. Since they've been around since the 30's that's pretty hard to do. Heroes that were once fresh and thrilling are now rehashes of what's been written in the decades prior. The big thing in comics over the last 20 years is the killing off of heroes. Superman, Batman, Blue Beetle, Captain America, Wolverine (who went to hell and had a running battle there), 3 Robins out of the 5 if you count Steph, the list is almost endless. Eventually you can count on them coming back to life in some ridiculous manner. Batman hasn't had an original story since The Court of the Owls, which was worth getting but a bit tedious in the many beatings and tortures Batman underwent. Now, in spite of the re-launching of both Marvel and DC, which have been mostly letdowns for me (notable exceptions are Arrow, Talon, Hawkeye, and Batman/Superman), I find a comic that is original, well scripted and has great illustrations. The hero, Xao, is a Chinese American living in Seattle. He gets caught up in some Shaolin Temple-type of locale in Alaska. The art reveals the intricacy of his martial art and gives a wonderful impression of movement. This book is like watching a movie, almost. It's been out for 3 years now by Dynamite, the most original and satisfying publisher there is. I just bought it and read it and came looking on Amazon for the sequel, only to find that it was a one-shot. A bit distressing. In fact the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is the abrupt finish that screams out to be continued. It's short; good if you want a quick read. It needed about 25 more pages to be complete in every way. Still and all, it stays away from the common comics threads of thought and is refreshing in its scope. Inexpensive and worth the read. I recommend it.Product details
